This is going to be a little messy and not as eloquent as I could be since I’m tired, but…
I think when most Americans hear “neo-Nazi” the image of an inbred skin-head “loser” comes to mind. Not someone who looks successful and well put together. Someone who could be your next-door neighbor.
I also think that a lot of people have this fantastic idea that they know evil when they see it. That if they had been a German in the 1930s, they wouldn’t have gone along with what what happening. That they would have seen through it all.
And now those two things are colliding with the alt-Right, who I’m gonna just straight up call Nazis because that’s what they are. This new brand of Nazis has come along and it clashes with everything people had in their head. They can’t be all that bad! They have a nice hair cut! And a nice suit! And a nice smile! So let’s not actually call them “Nazis” because that’s a little extreme and it might hurt their feelings.
When the whole time the fashionable image is ON PURPOSE because it makes them more palatable. It’s playing into their hands. I can’t remember if it was Goebbels or who it was, but being fashionable was on purpose- it was a tactical choice. So good job there some-of-the-media for falling right into that.
finally, you put to words what I couldn’t, but felt every time I saw a headline glorifying a neo-nazi/alt-right for being fashionable or good looking.
This is important and I wish I wasn’t so scared right now.
